WHAT FAMILIES SAY

"We adopted our little Darla Cakes a few months ago and she is the most playful, nosy, cuddly little baby we have ever had the honor to make a part of our family. You can tell she had great care and love before coming to her forever home, and even when we have concerns or are just confused about something, we reach out and they give us their best advice — not like a transaction, but as someone who actually cares. You can't go wrong with them!"

S. PICHARDO · AMERICAN FORK, UT

"They answered every question, even the awkward ones, and never once made me feel rushed."

DEREK & ANA · BOISE, ID

"Two years later they still check in on him. It genuinely feels like extended family."

J. HOLLAND · OREM, UT
Every one of them was somebody's favorite before they ever left this room.

PLACED AT 12 TO 16 WEEKS

We place at 12 to 16 weeks, not 8. Hairless kittens hold their temperature poorly and do better with the extra weeks on mom and littermates. She comes home fully weaned, litter-solid, socially confident, and vet-cleared.

ABOUT COAT AND EYE COLOR

Sphynx coats run from rubber bald to flocked (chamois), velour (suede), and brush — and a kitten's coat at twelve weeks doesn't predict her adult coat. Velour girls often go nearly bare by a year, and eye color takes several more weeks to settle. We'll tell you what we're seeing, but nobody can promise you a final look.

The four who actually run this house.

KING · 4 YRS

Short$tacks

Small, sturdy and endlessly nosy. She hasn't had a litter and won't until she's fully mature and cleared. We don't rush girls for the sake of a season.

FEMALE · 2 YEARS · NO LITTERS

Peaches

The soft one. She'd rather be under a blanket on your chest than anywhere else in the house, and she's the first to comfort a nervous kitten.

OUR JOURNEY & STANDARDS

We'd rather tell you exactly where we stand.

Welcome to Suede Star Sphynx. We're a small, passionate breeder dedicated to the health, temperament and beauty of Sphynx cats. To ensure we operate with the utmost integrity, we are currently working toward our TICA cattery registration and membership. Worth knowing: in 2025 TICA terminated experimental status for the Bambino, Dwelf and Elf, since the Munchkin and American Curl in their pedigrees keep them from being purely Sphynx. It makes those varieties rarer, not lesser — they remain registrable through the Rare and Exotic Feline Registry.

NOW
Small home cattery, three litters raised
Not currently a registered or TICA-registered breeder. We say that plainly because you deserve to know it before you ask.
NEXT
TICA cattery registration & membership
Actively working toward it: paperwork, standards and mentorship included.
SOON
AFF licensing
Our goal for the near future. When it happens, it'll be posted right here, not implied anywhere else.

How we do this differently

We offer love and attention to every kitten and cat here to help them grow. Our home caters to what they actually need instead of treating kittens like products. We see ourselves as the middleman in something great, homing them to loving families. While they're in our care they get the best we have: diet, cleanliness, security, and our presence.

DIET
High-protein food suited to a Sphynx's fast metabolism, fed on a schedule they can count on.
CLEANLINESS
Regular bathing, ear and nail care, and a home kept clean because hairless cats need it.
SECURITY
Warm, indoor-only, and predictable. Newborns are not handled by visitors, and nothing here is rushed.
PRESENCE
Someone is with them every day. That's the whole reason they go home already trusting people.
HEALTH, TESTING & VET CARE

Ask us anything about testing. We'd rather over-explain.

Sphynx are a wonderful breed with real, known health considerations. Here's how we handle ours, and what we can show you.

HCM SCREENED

We screen for HCM

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most serious inherited condition in the breed — a thickening of the heart muscle that a healthy-looking cat can carry without a single symptom. The only way to catch it is to look, so our breeding adults are screened by echocardiogram rather than assumed clear.

We'll show you the results and tell you when each cat was last scanned, so you're not taking our word for it. Peace of mind is the whole point.

VET CARE

Records, not promises

Every kitten sees a licensed vet before placement and leaves with written records and age-appropriate vaccinations. You get copies, not a verbal summary.

GUARANTEE

Health guarantee & contract

A written health guarantee and adoption contract come with every kitten. We'll send you the full text to read before any deposit. Pickup day holds no surprises.

Want to see the paperwork before you commit to anything?

Living with a hairless cat, honestly.

This is what we tell every family before pickup, and what we're happy to keep answering years later. Already have one of ours? This page is for you too.

01

Bathing

Roughly weekly with a gentle, fragrance-free shampoo. Without fur, skin oils build up, so a bath keeps them soft instead of tacky. Start young and it becomes a non-event.

02

Ears & nails

Those big almond ears collect wax fast. Wipe them weekly, and trim nails on the same schedule. Nail beds get greasy on hairless cats. Elf ears require more frequent cleaning as they have more narrow rigid ear canals.

03

Warmth

They will find the warmest spot in your house, and it will be you. Keep blankets everywhere, a sweater or two for winter, and expect them under the covers. Suggest a heated blanket during the cold seasons.

04

Sun & skin

Bare skin sunburns. Window naps are fine, long direct sun isn't. Watch for dry patches, especially in Utah desert climate.

05

Food & metabolism

They run hot and eat like it. High-protein food, consistent meals, fresh filtered water. A hungry Sphynx will absolutely tell you about it.

The food, broths and treats we feed our cats
06

Indoor only

Non-negotiable, and it's in the contract. Unless you are present and they are in your care. They depend on their owners to dress them accordingly. No coat means no protection from weather, sun, or anything else that's out there.

FAQ

The questions we get most, answered straight.

Are you TICA registered?

Not yet, and there's a wrinkle worth explaining. We are actively working toward TICA cattery registration and membership, with AFF licensing as our next goal. But at TICA's 2025 annual meeting the board voted to terminate experimental status for the Bambino, Dwelf and Elf outright, effective immediately, because those breeds don't meet TICA's registration rule for experimental breeds. Bambinos had held experimental status since 2005 and Dwelfs sat in the same Experimental New Breed category. Both are Sphynx crossed with the Munchkin's short-legged gene (the Dwelf adds American Curl ears), so the pedigree isn't purely Sphynx — that's exactly why the registry closed the door. It says nothing about health or quality: these are the same warm, wrinkled, ridiculous cats they were the week before. They are simply rarer now, still registrable through the Rare and Exotic Feline Registry, and a standard-eared Sphynx from our program remains fully TICA-eligible.

How much is a kitten?

Kittens in the current litter are $2,500–$3,200 depending on the kitten. We share deposit details and exactly what's included by private message — it lets us explain properly and answer follow-up questions, instead of in a comment thread.

What testing has been done?

Ask us directly and we'll tell you exactly what's been done, what's scheduled, and what hasn't happened yet. Every kitten sees a vet before placement and goes home with written records.

Is it spelled Sphynx or Sphinx?

The cat is a Sphynx, with a y. The Sphinx with an i is the stone one in Egypt. The breed took the name because the bare, upright, watchful look reminded people of the statue — but it's a Canadian breed, first bred from a hairless kitten born in Toronto in 1966, with no Egyptian origin at all. Every registry spells it Sphynx, so that's the spelling we use everywhere. If you searched “sphinx kittens” and landed here, you're in the right place.

How is a Sphynx different from a Devon Rex?

Genetically, a lot — different mutations, different countries, different decades. A Devon Rex (Cornwall, England, 1960s) isn’t actually hairless: it has a fine, soft, curly coat, so it sheds less and needs less bathing than a Sphynx, which is truly bare with just a light peach-fuzz down. Both share that same oversized-ear, big-eyed, wrinkled look people call “alien” or “pixie,” and both run warm and lean hard into laps, which is why people cross-shop them. Want zero shedding and don’t mind regular bathing? That’s a Sphynx. Want something closer to fur that still sheds very little? That’s a Devon Rex — ask us and we’ll happily point you to reputable Devon Rex breeders if that’s the better fit for your home.

Are Sphynx really hypoallergenic?

No. That's a myth we'd rather correct up front. The allergen is in saliva and skin, not fur. Many allergy sufferers do better with a Sphynx, but no cat is truly hypoallergenic. Spend time with one first.

How do kittens travel to me?

We're in Utah County. Local pickup is our favorite. You get to meet everyone. We also arrange ground transport or a flight nanny, at the adopter's cost.

When can a kitten come home?

When they're genuinely ready: eating well, litter-trained, socially confident, and vet-cleared. Never earlier because someone's excited, including us.

Why the screening questions?

Because we're the middleman in something great, not a store. Knowing about your home, other pets, kids, and vaccination plans helps us match the right kitten to the right family, and it's how we keep them from ending up rehomed later.

Do you offer breeding rights?

Kittens are placed as pets on a spay/neuter agreement. If you're a breeder and want to talk, message us. We're always glad to connect with the community.
